Welcome to my online gallery!

This blog will house current projects, competed works, and an archive of past works by me, David M. Vaughn of Cheney, Washington! I prefer charcoal, pencil, ink, and oil pastels. In the future I intend to incorporate sculpture and acrylic painting into my practice - much to learn! I also hope to start incorporating more projects I've got rummaging around in my head and a few of my favorite landscapes in the greater Spokane area. Once I get a start on anything, I'll post on the Work-in-Progress page.

For the time being the body of my work is focused on figure drawing, a discipline I greatly enjoy and can't learn enough from. I will be incorporating more projects I am working on as time progresses.

May 17, 2014 - Figure drawing from Spokane Art Supply!

So, I was able to fill out a few more pages in the sketchbook. I didn't deviate from the last figure drawing session working in the old sketchbook; used the same methods and media (see below). I did find it kinda frustrating this time working smaller. When working with your fingers, cross contour lines, used for adding volume and depth to the figure, are hard to manipulate. Especially when you've got a finger covered in chalk!

In any case, the 20 minute pose was a deviation in that I went back to my old method of laying down some nice dark chunky charcoal after using vine charcoal to map out the forms. Placement of my subject could have been much better this go-around; framing my subject wasn't quite how I intended, as evident with some missing feet! Was a good exercise, anyway, working small and determining what areas had the most light spilling on them.

Once again we were fortunate to get a fantastic model, Jaime. You might recognize her from not only my posts, but from countless artwork on display around the Pacific Northwest. If you peruse galleries between Spokane and Coeur D' Alene, you've probably seen her :)

And, if you are interested in attending a figure drawing studio, please click here! Whether beginner or expert, this studio offers the amount of structure and feedback to meet your needs in a highly supportive environment.

So, until next time, I bid you adios, amigos! Thank you for looking!!!

February 15, 2014 - Figure drawing from Spokane Art Supply!

I've decided to post four from this session, from four different poses...a 30 minute, a 10 minute, a 50 minute, and a 20 minute. Changed up what charcoal I usually use to accommodate the smaller format; used a hand sharpened General S. 557/6B extra soft charcoal pencil (fun but the tip wears down mighty quick!) and extra soft vine charcoal. The vine charcoal was particularly good for shading, adding textures, and setting value for clothing. Our model for this session, Natalie, is fantastic! Hopefully I've been able to capture her fantastic character a bit...

Spokane Sketchers Meetup - Spokane Public Market, January 25, 2014

Was able to get to a Meetup last January - such a good group of fellow artists to draw with! And such a fantastic place to sketch. The owner of the Soup cafe in the background even modeled for myself and another sketcher (or rather, since I arrived late, I took to sketching her as well!)

ARTISTS! If you're interested in being around other artists, of all backgrounds, or just want to change up your setting/medium a bit, contact information be at the bottom of the page!

Hello - I'm Dave's new sketchbook!
I've had a sketch book for awhile, but I've never really given the proper attention to it. Thanks to the Spokane Sketchers Meetup group, I've been able to dedicate a bit more thought and care toward filling out the pages...and as of December 2013 I'm starting fresh with a brand spanking new sketchbook :)  I'll update this page as I add content to the sketchbook - if I come up with anything decent I'll give a shout out on my main blog page.
